Despite the grinning performer facade, he was notoriously cranky often...


behind the scenes, or so I have read, like the demented mad scientist.

Odd duck is definitely fitting.... off on another plane, relentlessly pursuing his quest for the perfect EVH "brown sound" tone, relentlessly noodling and writing all the time. I have read he was most definitely the least of the "party" guys in the band... often would just keep writing and playing, coming up with new ideas after shows at hotels and on the buses / planes. Reclusive.

And most definitely wanted things his way, music wise. Unrelenting in that aspect.

He and Roth were very very creative together, but butted heads often, and it was seemingly a never ending power struggle. Roth told him nobody wants to hear you mess with keyboards, you are a guitar god. He was like, Oh yeah, well I'm gonna do it anyway.

When his producer Ted Templeman didn't do things the way he wanted, he decided OK screw you, I will build my own studio and do it my way. Period.

Most unique guy who will definitely be missed.
